A real rarity: letter dated 18 - 8 - 1932. The oldest known to date

Letter of 16.08.32 posted in Blamont, Meurthe and Moselle to Schlaffhausen in Switzerland at the rate of 1.50F at the time.

Back to the context of the sale of the 50c Peace

Transition of the fiduciary value of 0.50F for postage of letters from 1930 to 1937.

From 04.21.1930 to 07.11.1937 the postal rate for the 20g domestic letter will remain equal to 0.50F. The international rate (without surcharge) will be 1.50F. We understand the interest of the 0.50F face stamps.

In 1930 and 1931, the user can use the 0.50F stamp (YT n°272): Fachi woman who celebrates the colonial exhibition of 1931. The withdrawal of this stamp takes place regularly 1931.

Since 1921, the user also has at his disposal the 50c semeuse lignée (YT n°199), its withdrawal will take place during the second half of 1932 to be replaced by the 50c rouge à Type Paix. (YT #283). But when ? If the first prints of the 50c Type Paix begin in June 1932, in the absence of an official date of sale, the scanty literature on the subject (despite almost a century of hindsight) mentions until now 18.09.1932 as the date of general sale based on some letters of the time

The newspaper "Le Pèlerin" of July 24, 1932 shows on its front page that soon the "Sower" will be replaced by the type "Peace" so the month of August is therefore plausible for a sale!

What then of the above letter dated 16.8.1932?   My hypothesis is as follows: the first prints of the 50c Peace Type in June 1932 began to supply post offices. What sales instructions had been given? In the absence of official elements, difficult to say. Some very rare provincial offices (probably) had to face the progressive exhaustion of the 50c stamps of the Semeuse lineage type and very gradually begin to issue stamps of the 50c Peace type. This letter could attest to this with its mixed postage Sower + Peace.

Notebook stamp with advertisement "Benjamin"
One of the very first notebook letters.

Lettre 1932 | Philatélie

The Monleon Pastilles booklet: MOËT-BENJAMIN-BENJAMIN-BENJAMIN, one of the very first ever dated issued from July to September 1932, is a good candidate for the cutting of the stamp appearing on the letter dated 26.09.1932... But there are some other possibilities (few)
